How to Allergy-Proof Your Home in Four Steps

1. Promote Clean Water

It is of vital importance that people suffering from allergies would avoid drinking water straight from the faucet. A wide range of pollutants and allergens can travel into our water, thus contaminating it. From heavy metals, chlorine, and fluoride to motor oil, lawn fertilizers and animal feces – these are all potentially hazardous substances that can have a direct or indirect impact on allergies.

So, the bottom line is – purify your water. Whether it is a pitcher water filter or a whole purification system depends on what you are ready to invest in.

2. Promote Fresh Air

As we spend most of our time indoors we must really make sure our environment is pure and allergy-free. The cleaner the air we breathe, the better it is for us. Start with changing your air filters regularly. Get your air duct cleaned regularly by professional company. Wipe down your vents with damp cloth. Open up your windows periodically to move out stale air from your house, but then shut them to conserve it.

At last, invest in an air filter, which filtrates dust, pollen, and other particles that can potentially trigger allergies.

3. Promote Clean Living Space

Make your bedroom a safe haven from allergies and upgrade your night sleep. Eliminate dust mites living in your bedding. Buy dust mite covers for your pillows, mattress and duvet cover. Wash your sheets and pillow cases at least once a week. Replace your pillows if you have had them for more than two years and your mattress if you have had it for more than five to seven years. Keep plants and pets away from your bedroom if you don’t want to wake up to a nasal congestion, itchy eyes or sneezing. Dust and clean your curtains, shades or blinds. Liberate yourself from that clutter! It aids not only allergies, but also emotional and psychological health.

4. Promote Clean Kitchen

Get ready for a revolution in your kitchen! Of course, you can’t replace all the items in your kitchen at once, but you can do one thing at a time. Rethink using non-stick pans as they release chemicals that may cause allergies, liver damage and even cancer. Stay away from plastic, polystyrene foam, aluminum and stainless steel. Think allergy-friendly kitchen ware, like glass, enamel or cast-iron pots and pans; wooden utensils; porcelain spoons; and wooden chopsticks.

Ditch your electric teapot, which have plastic in it, and switch it for covered glass pot or an enamel kettle to make your tea or coffee. And don’t forget about your cutting boards – unless you want some plastic in your food, you better chop on wood. It is as clean as plastic, if washed regularly with soap and hot water.
